Welcome to MadRails!

The Madison Ruby on Rails user group

We are a usergroup in Madison, Wisconsin, focused on the web application framework Ruby on Rails. Although we call ourself a “Rails” group, we welcome meetings on pure Ruby topics.

News

Need a VPS for only $10 a month? Head over to SilverRack and use coupon code “madisonrails” when signing up to get $10 back per month on a 256mb or higher plan for a total monthly cost of only $10! Did I mention you can get a 256mb slice for only $10 a month! (slightly excited)...I emailed Dave (the owner or this VPS company) to hook up our madison rails community. He said to share the coupon code so here you go! – Jon Kinney. You may consider Dreamhost, in case shared hosting work for you (which is usually unlikely). If that is the case, you can use Dreamhost promo to get $50 discount or this dreamhost promo code to get extra space and $50 discount.

schedule app for Barcamp

Check out our project on Ruby Forge! And visit the ConfCalendar web site!

Subscribe via email to the BarCamp Mailing List with a Google groups account.

Name Ideas

The winner Is:

ConfCalendar (Jeff has secured the .com, .net, and .org) We may use the .org as the primary TLD and redirect the .com to the .org. We might want to use the .net as the developer/secret-project-work site?

Runners up:

Doeet.com (Jim already has it registered)

ConfCal.org

BarTime

CampCounselr

Other BarCamp Scheduler Names

General App Ideas

User-centric events

barcamp app user profiles

Tagging

Facilitators own sessions

Facebook-type community pages

Tracking (Event, Speaker, Friend, Topic)

Single-screen UI - similar to Drupal example Blake showed us last week

CMS

CMS Options

Build our own RoR CMS

Build off of Mephisto CMS (RoR)

Build on Drupal (and build our own Drupal theme though it is PHP-based)

captcha test page

Test the BrainBuster captcha here!

Brainbuster simple logic captcha plugin for Rails. Yes, it could be defeated with scripting, but so can many image captchas. We are just looking to eliminate the vast majority of spam that comes from being an easy target.

Nifty, it apparently accepts the result of math logic as words. However, this can be automated quite easily by using Google most often than not. Example
2
Excellent, because if there’s one way humans are superior to computers it’s logic! ;)

It does seem to work for me. Don’t forget to edit if you want to use the test!
jkljk;l
What captcha are you using? Is it the validates_captcha plugin? — No, its BrainBuster.

Once I have provided the captcha answer, I am no longer asked for another one the next time I want to post. Nice feature or bug? I assume you set some flag in the session, but that will require user to have enabled cookies, right? — Its a feature – it saves it in the cookie. You can disable that, of course.

Shiney! I wonder how long before natural language processors will be able to parse and crack things like this. More or less time than neural network image processing.. (which is already done to a small extent by spammers, from what I understand).

Interesting ….

Interesante ….

No wonder!

Rob Sanheim – I’m the admin of the wiki and working full time with Rails. I like cheese.

I am building a fully buzzword compliant Web 2.0 app (using RoR) at home in my spare time. (tho, truth be told, all the heavy lifting is done in Perl)

Chris Van Vlack – Local Madison J2EE guy as well. Living it up, while coding it down. I like to eat pudding.

I first started looking playing with Ruby in about 2001, but only off and on. In two words: REXML rocks! I hope that someday the stars will align and I’ll actually make it to a meeting. In my copious free time, I’m also a core developer for the Perl programming language.

Jeff Sutherland – I am a web development consultant who focuses mostly on online learning and UI development. I do Java, .Net (gags as he writes that), JavaScript, Ajax, CSS, XHTML, and anything else that makes an online course or UI work. I have done Rails professionally, and I loved every minute of it.

I’d like to help my fellow developers by designing and building clever CSS-driven front-end user experiences for RoR, PHP, and eCommerce web apps.

John Buol – I learned about RoR after giving up on OpenACS (powerful, complex, and obscure) and finding that is where several high-level oACS developers left for.

If that is the case, you can use Dreamhost promo to get $50 discount.

captcha test page

“Code and Coffee’s” are informal meetings to code, chat, collaborate, or do whatever. We don’t have any set schedule or presentations for these.

See the schedule for future events, or subscribe to the event calendar.

We often go to Escape Java Joint, on Willy St, or Electric Earth on W. Washington for these. If you have a favorite coffee shop you’d like to try please suggest it.

Did I mention you can get a 256mb slice for only $10 a month! (slightly excited)...I emailed Dave (the owner or this VPS company) to hook up our madison rails community. He said to share the coupon code so here you go! – Jon Kinney

Rob Sanheim – I’m the admin of the wiki and working full time with Rails. I like cheese.

Thomas Yates – I’m just a local Madison J2EE guy that is sick of the UN NEEDED complexity that I am forced to grapple with every day in the J2EE space.

I am working on a home inventory program right now using RoR.

I do Java, .Net (gags as he writes that), JavaScript, Ajax, CSS, XHTML, and anything else that makes an online course or UI work. I have done Rails professionally, and I loved every minute of it.

Ryan Fowler – I’m an sw engineer at Berbee. Over the years, I’ve fought w/ J2EE and PHP enough to appreciate Rails. Here’s to getting to work on it for real.

Seeing so much interest that a local user group dedicated to RoR formed in Madison sealed my decision to move.

Madison Coworking

From Angel Dobbs-Sciortino:

I am currently working on setting up a permanent office space for computer programmers, web designers, graphic designers, etc that are independent contractors and would like a shared space to work alongside others. The office space I’m looking at is on the near east side, and I would like to get this going within the next month.

The office has a restroom, and it will also have a refrigerator and a microwave. There is no kitchen, but if I have enough interest (at least 13 people), I will be able to rent the adjoining room which can have a small kitchen.

There will be fast internet (3-6 Mbps downstream) and a printer/scanner/copier. The space would cost each person about $250/month to use.

If anyone is interested or knows someone that would be interested, let me know. You can contact me at “coworking (at) angeliccomputing dot com”.

See the google groups thread for more details.

What is coworking? From the Coworking site: Coworking is cafe-like community/collaboration space for developers, writers and independents.

captcha test page

BrainBuster

A logic captcha plugin for Rails.

Full home page and details here

Want to play around? Edit this captcha test page to try it out – you probably need to clear your session cookies if you have already edited a page.

captcha test page

Test the BrainBuster captcha here!

Brainbuster simple logic captcha plugin for Rails. Yes, it could be defeated with scripting, but so can many image captchas. We are just looking to eliminate th
Nifty, it apparently accepts the result of math logic as words. However, this can be automated quite easily by using Google most often than not. Example
